COAST TO COAST
This section has been created to mirror the supports I provide for Ontario families, but with a focus on individual regions. While This Way Forward was written in Ontario, the challenges, stories, and practical needs of adults with disabilities are the same across the country. Below you’ll find tabs containing a list of programs and services available throughout each province— from crisis behaviour supports to life skills training, mental health care, employment programs, and community inclusion.

LOWER MAINLAND / METRO VANCOUVER & NEARBY
Pivot Point Family Growth Centre
Support for adults with autism and diverse abilities. Pivot Point’s Adult Services program helps people 19+ build life and social skills, prepare for jobs, and increase community inclusion. Services are available one-on-one or in small groups, and many are funded through CLBC (PSI, PSSL).

Community Living BC (CLBC)
A provincial crown agency that funds supports for adults with developmental disabilities, autism, or FASD who need help with daily living. Supports include day programs, residential options, behaviour support, and life skills training.

Developmental Disabilities Association (DDA)
Based in Vancouver and Richmond, DDA offers adult day programs, respite, residential group homes, supported apartments, employment supports, and outreach/life skills programs.

Island Health - Developmental Disability Mental Health Team
Supports adults with developmental or intellectual disabilities who also face mental health or behavioural challenges. Services include assessment, treatment planning, coordination with community supports, psychiatric and nursing input.

Developmental Disabilities Mental Health Services (DDMHS)
DDMHS provides specialized mental health care for children, youth, and adults with both intellectual/developmental disabilities and mental health needs. Services vary by region but may include psychiatric consultation, behavioural supports, counselling, and case management. Referrals usually come through a doctor or community agency such as CLBC.

Services to Adults with Developmental Disabilities (STADD – CLBC)
Supports youth (16–24) with developmental disabilities who are transitioning into adulthood. Provides navigator support, transition planning, and connections to CLBC services in communities across BC.

Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Benefit
The PWD benefit provides monthly financial assistance and extended health supports to eligible British Columbians with significant and persistent disabilities. Supports may include income assistance, medical coverage, dental and optical benefits, and transportation or other supplements.

Provides lifespan supports for people with developmental disabilities, with a strong focus on adults. Alberta Health Services operates Community Support Teams that work with adults who have both an intellectual/developmental disability and a significant mental health concern. Family-based non-profit federation that advocates with and for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and their families across Alberta. Supports can include individual and family advocacy (housing, funding, education), inclusive employment, inclusive post-secondary education partnerships with colleges and universities, and resource centres for family-managed supports.

Inclusive Post-Secondary Education (IPSE) - Multiple Colleges & Universities in Alberta
Through partnerships between Inclusion Alberta and post-secondary institutions, adults with intellectual disabilities can attend regular college or university programs with individualized supports for coursework, campus life, and employment preparation. Alberta has one of the highest numbers of inclusive post-secondary sites in the world.

Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) - Province-Wide
Income-support program that provides financial and health benefits for eligible adult Albertans with a permanent medical condition that severely limits their ability to earn a living. AISH can help with basic living costs and includes certain health, dental, and optical benefits.

Developmental Disabilities Mental Health - Arnika Centre & Complex Needs Initiative - Province-Wide (AHS)
The Arnika Centre (Calgary Zone) provides psychiatric assessment and consultation for adults and older teens with intellectual disabilities who also have mental health concerns or significant behavioural challenges. Province-wide “Complex Needs” services coordinate supports for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities and serious mental health/behavioural needs through specialized teams and cross-ministry collaboration.
